Hanuman (Vijayanagara) (IBS305)

Description

This standing Hanuman dates from the end of a very important time in the history of Indian bronzes. After the Chola and the Pala periods the next most influential period is the Vijayanagara period. The detail of the workmanship from this era is fantastic.

Here we see Hanuman, the vahana of Lord Rama, in a standing posture. His hands are in Anjali Mundra showing His devotion to Lord Rama. The detail is fantastic. Hanuman is decorated with a fantastic garland of flowers and upon closer inspection has 'fangs' in the corner of his mouth. These fangs probably represent His position as an ultimate brave warrior. The Ramayana details his exploits well.

There is no damage to this piece and very little wear. It represent an excellent example of the monkey hero God of substantial size and quality.
