Lakshminarasimha (IBS274)
Description
To find such a rare and ornate icon like this with no damage is simply amazing. Here we see Lord Narasimha and his his consort Lakshmi under a 5 headed cobra. Narasimha is using the tail of the cobra as a Yogi band. The tail wraps around his knees, loops at the back and then rises above. Narasimha hold the conch and chakra in his upper arms. His lower left arm embraces Lakshmi whilst holding a club/mace and his lower right in in Varada Mundra with a vine or lotus stem wrapped around. They both sit upon a very nice lotus base which itself is then on top of another base. At some point Narasimha's mouth would have been inlaid with precious jewels.
The image is striking and in remarkable condition. There is some wear from worship and remnants of power remain in the recesses. The base is hollow cast making this surprisingly light for its size. This is in keeping with the age of this piece.
