Crawling Balakrishna (Kondai) (IBS271)

Description

A particular favourite image of ours is this crawling Balakrishna. It is exclusive to Tamil Nadu and so called 'Kondai' because of the stylisation of the headdress. This piece is of exceptional quality and size. It is rare to find such a piece that has not been worshipped. It must have been one of many Krishnas on an altar and because of it's beauty remain there for many hundreds of years whilst other images were used for veneration

The patination is amazing and there absolutely no damage or wear to this 17th Century icon. We are particularly taken by the kirtimuka on the back of the channavira. In all the years we have never seen this and it makes this icon quite unique.
