Vishnu Wood Carving (IBH343)

Description

This fine wood carving shows Vishnu in an unusual seated posture with both Devis on his knees. Compare to depictions of Vishnu standing in Samapada such seated ones are quite uncommon, even more so with the complete iconography of Sri and Bhu Devi. All are seated on a large lotus under a double arch decorated with garlands.

Vishnu is featuring the chakra and conch in his upper hands while the lower ones embrace the Devis while holding the gada and a second not yet identified attribute.

A crack runs through the base and lotus that does not distract from the beauty of the serene and benign expression of all the three faces, especially Vishnu's.
