Unknown Shaivite Saint (IBS229)

Description

Here we see an interesting piece. It is an unknown Saint of Shiva. As can be seen from the photographs there are many aspects of Shiva. The Saint has a headdress and earring decoration that would assimilate him to Shiva. Notice also the dagger around his waist and the mustache.

A friend of Indian Bronzes has offered the following: "He seems to be the very rare Kiritarjuna, a form of Shiva."

What makes this the most interesting is that hands are not original. Although of some age the detail/colour and style is different from the Saint himself. We assume that some damaged occurred and the owner either had the icon amended or someone took the icon and changed it in this way. Whichever case, he obviously meant something to someone.

It is possible that he previously held a weapon, impliment or instrument in both hands across his chest as there are some remains visible.
