Description

This cosmographical Jain painting shows Manushyaloka, the middle world of the mortals. It is the most important of the three worlds because it offers liberation from all circles of birth and death. This so called victory banners or victory diagram - Jayatra Yantras - depicts oceans with fish, tortoise and water pots. It also depicts continents including Jambudvipa with Mount Meru, horseriders, Tirthankaras, Bastis and mortals.

A very fine and unusually rare painting, one of which was recently sold at Christies New York.
