Vishnu (IBS183)

Description

Images of Vishnu in this style originate from Northern India. In this example Gujarat or Madhya Pradesh. It is very heavily influenced by the Pala period.

Here we see Lord Vishnu with the mace and chakra in the upper arms. He is accompanied by his 2 consorts. In the forefront are 2 'stumps' which are very heavily worn. Tradition would dictates that these are images on donors but it is hard to tell for sure. Above Vishnu on either side are 2 figures, again quite worn. These could be saints or more likely representations of Bramha and Shiva, thus depicting the Hindu Triad and Vishnu as the Lord above all.

Images like this, and of this age, are considerably rare. Other than the typical wear there is no other damage. An excellent representation that is single cast, again typical of the time and region.
