Varaha (IBH267)

Description

Varaha (Sanskrit: वराह) is the 3rd avatar of Vishnu. In this form Lord Vishnu takes on the appearance of a boar. He appeared to thw world in order to defeat Hiranyaksha, a demon who had taken the Earth and carried it to the bottom of the cosmic ocean. The battle between Varaha and Hiranyaksha lasted for a thousand years. Eventually Varaha was able to defeat Hiranyaksha and returned the Earth to its rightful place, carrying it between his tusks. In this avatar Varaha's consort is Bhu Devi.

In all our years collecting and dealing in bronzes we have rarely seen this image. We have come across it in stone a few times and in wood also. To see it in bronze is magnificent and only because we have examples in our collection are we offering it here. Pieces like this only come around once in a lifetime and we are pleased to offer here.

This bronze is of a fantastic size, 24.00cm, and was most likely commissioned and resided in a Vaishnava temple. Its condition is almost perfect. These is some very minor damage to the back of the base. Other than that it is in almost perfect condition and the best we could ever expect to see.
