Ivory Dashavatara Set (IBH203)

Description

This set belongs to the Tanjore/Srirangam school and is of the finest example we could expect to find and we will see only in the Museum of the Ranganatha temple there.

We have seen many single items of this size and quality but never a set such as this. Only the Buddha is missing from this set but all hindu deities are present. The carving is really extraordinarily fine and it is doubtful that such an opportunity will arise again.

We sent pictures of this set to two indian friends and dealers, both immediately requested to bring them back to India. That fact adds to the rarity and quality we have here. Some minor damage and missing detail is present but the overall condition is still very good.

Of special interest are of course the rare depictions of Avatras such as Matsya, Kurma and Vamana but in first line the depiction of a Kalki, which we have never seen in such fine quality.
