Dancing Balakrishna (Chola) (IBS257)

Description

Not often do we come across pieces like this one. This is a Chola image of the infant Krishna. In this form he is known as Balakrishna.

The detail is fantastic, and extraordinary in such a small sized piece. Quality like this will only be viewed in museums or private collections, which sadly we can not see every day.

The patination is a wonderful colour. This is one of our favourites images of the infant Krishna.

On the inside of the base is the number "456" which would indicate this piece formed part of a very large collection, possibly of a museum or substantial private collection. We acquired it from the USA many years ago. There is a very small area of bronze loss on the top of the base, and another to the right side, and what appears to be glue residue underneath the base. It is common for pieces of this age to be cast separately from the base so this must have been applied to secure the icon and base together.
