Venugopala Set (IBH190)
Description
In terms of quality this Venugopala set represents the best we have seen for a long time. As there is very little wear we assume that must have been, for decades, in a Vaishnavite family where another deity was worshipped and Venugopala was only held in esteem without receiving regular worship. If he had been venerated we could not expect him to be in such perfect condition.
This is an unusual bronze and therefor extremely rare because Venugopala is depicted as an infant or young adult. Although this may appear elsewhere it is not something we come accross often.
Another unusal and surprising feature is the cavelike recess in the base topped by a Kirtimukha. The most likely reason for this curious shape could be that a cow/cow-calf idol, a Garuda or one of the Acharyas was placed there.
This represents a very fine piece in excellent condition and we are pleased to be able to offer it for sale here.
