Chandrashekara (IBH186)

Description

It is rare to come across genuine Indian temple bronzes available on the market. We are delighted to be able to offer such a piece of the late Vijayanagara period.

This is a massive 17th Century temple brone of Shiva in his form as Chandrashekara, the Lord crowned with the moon. What is so remarkable about this bronze the condition, it is the best we could hope to find without any damage. What makes this bronze also particularly unusual, beside the size and condition, is the depiction of the goddess Ganga, who appears from the right side of his head. The thin crescent of the moon commonly placed on this side of his head has therefor shifted to the left.

Shiva is standing erect in samapada, four armed, holding the battleaxe (parasu) and the antelope (mriga) in his rear arms and showing abhaya and varada mudra with the front arms. He is adorned with rich jewelery and he shows a benign conternance.

We have slightly cleaned the upper front part of this bronze by removing dust and dirt to give a gimpse how the fully cleaned statue will appear after the minimum necessary treatment. Please compare the last two images.

This is a rare opportunity to see, and maybe aquire, such a bronze. Please feel free to contact us for more information.
