Urlys (IBH020)

Description

We are priveledged, proud and a little lucky to be able to offer for sale a good range of southern Indian cooking vessels. These vessels are called Urlys and came from a temple in Tamil Nadu. The government of India has banned their export now so only a few are available.

The ones we have were used up until the second half of the 20th Century. During temple festivals these vessels are used for cooking rice, dal and sabji over open fires. They still have soot on the lower part and are covered with typical red mud. Various forms and designs were made, mainly on the handles, which are fashioned in such a way that allows them to be carried using bamboo rods.

We have several of these in various sizes. The dimensions range from 80.00cm to 100.00cm and the prices range from €1000 to €2500 depending on size, age and condition.

Please use the form below to contact us if you would like more information. We will be happy to supply more photographs on request.
